Online Toxicity

The stip toxicity analyser comes in various formats to suit several different applications ranging from intake protection to biomass fed from MLSS of a treatment plant

ToxSys_stip can be configured as a toxicity analyser with immobilized turbulent- bed biology. As in the CSys_biox, the microbes grow on the inner surface of small hollow cylinders. Like the activated sludge of a treatment plant, the microbial population in the bioreactor is adapted to the conditions of the wastewater. So long as the wastewater is not toxic to the adapted biology, the organisms in the bioreactor take up dissolved oxygen. A toxic impact inhibits the respiration of the organisms, causing an increase in the dissolved oxygen level. If the respiration rate decreases by more than about 20%, an additional dilution of the wastewater is triggered, and is regulated such that the overall depression of microbial activity does not exceed 20%. This protects the microbes and provides the mechanism for toxicity measurement.
The mixing ratio of wastewater and dilution water, together with the oxygen difference, are used to calculate the toxicity reading.

ToxSys_stip can also be configured as a continuous on-line toxicity analyser for other applications. The bioreactor is populated with microorganisms from the wastewater treatment process. For the analysis, wastewater is continuously mixed with activated sludge and dilution water. So long as the wastewater is not toxic to the adapted biology, the organisms in the bioreactor take up dissolved oxygen. A toxic impact inhibits the respiration of the organisms, causing an increase in the dissolved oxygen level. Increasing oxygen level is the measure for toxicity. For monitoring and control, ToxSys_stip is equipped with signal outputs of 0-20 or 4-20 mA. A built-in graphical display shows concentration data and other important information, which are stored for the last 14 days. A diskette drive provides long-term data storage. For measuring toxicity in simulated tank conditions, the waste-water/activated sludge mixture is pumped directly from the aeration basin to the bioreactor. The oxygen level in the bioreactor is then proportional to that in the aeration basin. toxicity
